World War II
Like just about all wars, what a stunningly stupid waste of life, time and resources.

But more than that, how could an entire nation have been hoodwinked into allowing, consciously or not, the brutal murder of millions of innocent people?

If it was not for the Holocaust and Hitler's attack on the Soviet Union, would the Germans have won the war?

Some people might not have been aware of a plan that should Churchill be incapacitated that Jan Smuts the prime minister of South Africa, would be proposed as prime minister of the UK?

Re: World War II
The grimmest book I have ever read about WW2 is, "Road of Bones: The Epic Siege of Kohima 1944", by Fergal Keane.

It depicts humanity at its basest, in a tiny area, with more hand-to-hand carnage than a Stalingrad veteran could shake a grenade at. Kohima is probably the least known and one of the most important engagements of WW2; it could have been a major turning point for the Axis forces if it had gone the other way,

The heroes are a mix of British and Indian troops, and some really slithery native fuckers in the depths of the bush. It's a good read, but not to be taken while consuming any dish containing meat.

The USSR would have rolled up to the English channel if not for D Day

Unlikely.

USA had nukes in 1945, Russia not until 1949. Having seen their devastation on Japan, don't think Uncle Joe, would have risked that

Cough... think the Japs were banking on the 4 Big Flat Tops (Lexington, Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown) being at Pearl harbor... could have made a major difference if they had lost all 4 main carriers as well as the vast majority of their battleships... unluckily for Tojo they were out on exercise... and a few months later made all the difference at Midway

Give it another 50 years and WW2 will be a distant memory people hear very little about or even realise it occured.

Already there are calls from the snowflakes and easily offended and scared for it not to be taught in schools as it traumatises the kiddies and bad for their mental health.

Although the IJN the Japanese navy attacked the USA at Pearl Harbor, it was the navy led by Admiral Yamamoto who argued against it, warning the hot heads in the government led by Tojo that it would be foolish but his hand was forced when Japan finally joined the Axis

Thanks fellas, that all makes sense. Greed obviously got the better of Germany and Japan. Bizarre decisions to decide to attack the USSR and the USA.

Re: World War II
The alliance between the US and USSR was only a short-term marriage of convenience to defeat Japan and Nazi Germany.

It's worth remembering that both countries only entered the war after they were attacked by Japan and Germany.

The USSR and other nations "Liberated" by them during the war were then "Colonised" by Stalin and his successors into puppet communist states until 1989

Russia suffered worse than any other country in the war some of it self inflicted so they made sure there borders were secure. If not for allied invasion on D Day the USSR would have kept what they had taken it would down to the yanks to decide where they drew the line if parts of France were occupied. We went to war for Poland and Churchill wanted to go to war with USSR when they occupied it but the yanks would not have it

The Chinese were having a civil war at the time but untied to fight the Japanese. The communist entered Beijing in 1949

Zico

Ideology is the basic answer for USSR and China. Willing to sacrifice millions of the people they ruled for the Revolution. Many of Allies opposed that and the ideology itself.

For Germany and Japan, they were to one degree or another occupied by Allies (America mostly) for years. We did actually learn a lesson from Versailles and generally tried to help rebuild rather than punish.

That and the threat of Communism which again already had a bloody history, whatever you think of the principles.

Re: World War II
What intrigues me and hopefully someone will explain why, is how "allies" became "enemies" and "enemies" became "allies" in the years after the war. For instance both the USSR and China were on the side of the Allies but relationships with the West deteriorated massively after the war. Were the USSR and China enemies of the West prior to WW2? Plus Germany, Italy and Japan today are seemingly allies of the West so a total about turn in so many ways.

Barbarossa by Alan Clarke is a great read on the Eastern Front.

Georing promised Hitler the Luftwaffe could supply Paulus's surrounded 6th Army but delivered a fraction of what they needed.

Having just finished watching The Vietnam War for the third time and seeing The Wall memorial for American losses 58,000 it reminds me of the Bomber Command losses about the same amount.

You should all have a look at ‘the Red Baron audiobooks’ on YouTube he’s uploaded scores of audiobooks about ww2, lots of rare books not published in the U.K. Since I got subscription to YT I’ve never bought an audiobook
